- How often should I re-mulch?
- Once a year in early spring is ideal. Beds in heavy sun may need a light top-off midsummer.
- Hardwood or pine straw?
- Hardwood looks tidy and lasts longer. Pine straw is traditional here and great for acid-loving plants like azaleas and camellias.
- Will mulch stop all weeds?
- It stops most. Any that come through are easier to pull because roots stay shallow in loose mulch.
- Do you haul away old mulch first?
- Only if it's rotted or matted. Otherwise we turn it and top-dress with a fresh layer.
